World Cup art competition winners honoured

Gelsenkirchen mayor Frank Baranowski and World Cup ambassador Olaf Thon today honoured the winners of a World Cup art competition in which 258 Year Four, Five and Six pupils from the city's schools took part.

The five winning paintings will go on display on around 100 giant posters made available by ströer, a local company. In addition, the overall winner is set to be reproduced on a large banner hung on the outside of the shopping centre at the main railway centre. An overview of all the competition entries can be obtained at an exhibition in the foyer of the education centre on Ebertstrasse, where the original paintings will be on show until March 11.

The five-person jury picked out the pictures by the following pupils:

  • Lena Mieberg, aged 12 (1st place)
  • Hannah Dahlmann, aged 10 (2nd place)
  • In joint third place: Hillary Pang, aged 11
    Ibrahim Hoyladi, aged 16
    Lukas Ludwig-Schniggenberg, aged 12.
  • The jury's short list also included the works by: Elena Brukh, Isabel Hartmann, Meltem Erdogan, Anna Barfknecht, Luisa Neumann, Nusret Kapucu, Vilden Meta, Pascal Siemes and Hayriye Öztürk.
The top five each win two tickets for a concert during the 2006 FIFA World Cup Fan Fest™ at the Glückauf-Kampfbahn stadium, while the pupils in first and second place will also get to watch one of FC Schalke 04's Bundesliga home games from the press seats.
