New platform roofs for VELTINS Arena tram stop

The tram stop serving the VELTINS Arena has been sporting a fabulous new look since the beginning of the week. Two new platform roofs have been erected as part of the construction work for the World Cup, thus ensuring that fans remain dry as they wait for their tram.

During the work the two roofs were pre-assembled on the adjacent coach park and on the path between Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse (northbound carriageway) and Stan-Libuda-Weg. To this end a number of large steel trusses were brought to the building site on abnormal load vehicles and welded together to form a complete roof. Once assembled, the roofs were lifted onto the pre-installed supports by means of two 800-tonne cranes.

To lift the roof of the southern platform for trams in the direction of Buer, the cranes had to be positioned on Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse, which meant the road had to be closed for a day.
